Bad weather can cause bad things...

As I mentioned yesterday, we had bad weather yesterday here in Tuk, and it was bad in Inuvik yesterday as well. With winds up to 70km/hr, one can expect damage to buildings, and other infrastructure. Yesterday when we were delivering one of my cakes, the vehicle (that we are using for dogsitting) was just rocking while we were sitting in it, due to the wind. Our co-worker had new shingles put on her house last week, and she says that now half of them are lying all over her yard.

The worst news however, is the news we got this morning that the Aklak Air hangar in Inuvik burned to the ground early this morning, with three planes in it. Word so far is that the high winds ripped the roof off of the hangar, and that an electrical fire was started. We'll see if that is accurate, when we hear more from the news and from the company in the days ahead.

This is bad news all around, for the people who work at Aklak, the owner of the planes, and the fact that Aklak is owned by the same company that we work for. More distressing is the fact that for the time being, transportation from the four communities that depend on Aklak Air (including Tuk) has been cut off. Of course, it is possible that Northwright Airways could step in and run some charters, and also that the company will send up some planes from their Calgary base. However, as of right now from what we know, there are few, if any, planes available to service our community.

Going to go stock up on groceries at lunch, because it is doubtful that we'll get fresh food over the next while, and thinking of our friends who are trying to leave the community, one to have a baby in the very near future, and friends who are trying to leave for their honeymoon.
