A very apt description. . .

"It had no breathtaking scenery. No mountains, no glaciers, in the winter not even that much snow. But after a while it grew on them, on some of them at least, on the ones who would never forget, who would think back on their lives and say, My time here was the most vivid time of my life."
From: Late Nights on Air, by Elizabeth Hay

True, the scenery is often very plain at times, flat, white, and cold. But when the sun shines, it shines like no sun I've ever seen before, when the sun rises and sets, the colours are the most remarkable shades of yellows, oranges, pinks and reds. When the moon is full, it lights up the harbour, and when the Aurora Borealis make their appearance, they wave calmly throughout the night sky. The extremes of the midnight sun and no sun at all, warm summer and bitter winter make me appreciate beautiful days moreso than I ever have in the past. It may be minus forty, but a bright sun shining down on the tundra can be mood lifting. It may be pitch black at four in the afternoon, but still day with the Northern lights shining above can be breathtaking.

The North- the people, the landscape, and the fact that people and animals can survive and thrive in this environment- will always have a special place in my heart. This is a place that will be hard to leave, if and when the time comes...
