Packing for all seasons...

How does one pack for all seasons when they are only allowed one suitcase that can weight a maximum of 50 pounds? Canadian North, our major carrier from Inuvik to Edmonton allows 2 bags of 70 pounds each. Air Canada allows 2 bags of 50 pounds each, and we travel with them from Edmonton to Toronto. Unfortunately, we have to take Delta/Northwest from Miami to Edmonton, and they only allow one checked bag, of 50 pounds. AND that is only because we booked our tickets back in May. Had we booked them after July 2009, we would be allowed ZERO bags, and would have to pay $25 for each checked bag. Honestly, what is this world coming to?

Travelling from the high Arctic, to the moderate Ontario, to the hot Caribbean requires several different types of clothing ranging from goose down parkas and winter boots to bathing suits, shorts and flip flops. None of these destinations require similar attire!

At any rate, I am doing my best to pack tightly and to leave enough room to bring a few goodies back north with me... We'll see how that goes.

And it's only about to get worse!! I just received an email from Air Canada saying that after January, they will only allow one checked bag as well, with 50 pounds, and each additional bag is $100 I believe. Ridiculous!

The irony is that our little airline up here used to allow only 40 pounds of baggage, so they were usually the little "hiccup" in the logistics process. However, they just upped the luggage allowance to 66 pounds... and we can't use it due to Air Canada's 50 pound limit. I'm thinking our airline knew this was coming and upped it to 66 pounds as a publicity stunt, since anyone coming from the south can't use the extra baggage allowance anyway.

Here ends my rant.

For those who are interested, here is the flight plan for my 4 week holiday:

Tuk->Inuvik->Norman Wells->Yellowknife->Edmonton->Calgary->Toronto->Miami->Atlanta->Minneapolis->Edmonton->Yellowknife->Norman Wells->Inuvik->Tuk
