
Aklavik is actually located in the Gwich'in Settlement Area, but is populated by both Inuvialuit and Gwich'in. The total population is 594. The Inuvialuktun meaning of Aklavik is "barren-ground grizzly place."
Inuvik is located on the border of the ISR and the Gwich'in Settlement Area. There is a population of 3,424. The name Inuvik means "place of man."
Tuktoyaktuk, my home, is populated by 930 people. The Inuvialuktun name (Tuktuyaaqtuuq) means "looks like a caribou."
Paulatuk is located on Darnley Bay in the Amundsen Gulf. It is home to 294 people, and it is named for the nearby Smoking Hills. Paulatuuq means "place of coal."
Sachs Harbour is home to 122 people, and was originally named Ikahuak, which means "where you go across to."
Ulukhaktok, formerly known as Holman, is located on Victoria Island, and is home to 398 people. Most people say that Ulukhaktok is the most beautiful community in the ISR. Its name, which is of the Kangiryuarmiutun dialect of the Inuvialuktun group, means "place where ulu parts are found." An ulu is like a half-moon shaped knife with a handle that allows for easy cutting of harvested animals. They are made of slate and copper.
